The bond between Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods has worsened.

Although Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods have been friends and allies for almost ten years, the LIV Golf has had a negative effect on their friendship. This is the best tandem on the PGA Tour.

Although Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have always been among the closest of friends in the professional golf world, their “falling out” has unleashed an uncontrollable civil war.

Despite being business partners and longtime friends, Woods and McIlroy appear to have different opinions on the direction the game will take. On Wednesday, McIlroy announced that his attempt to rejoin the PGA Tour Policy Board had failed.

Up until his resignation in November, the Northern Irishman served as a player director and member of the board. He was upset about the way the tour was going and the effect his position was having on both his personal and professional life. However, he gave in to Webb Simpson’s request last month, who desired to step down from his position if McIlroy took his place.

The policy board’s agenda is dominated by the current merger contract negotiations between the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF), which finances LIV Golf, and the tour. Although McIlroy was a fierce opponent of the breakaway tour, he has recently changed his mind and is advocating for attempts to bring the game back together.

Golf Digest claims that Woods has an alternative perspective. The 15-time major champion, who is at the center of negotiations with PIF as one of the six player directors on the circuit, was not thrilled about McIlroy rejoining the policy board.

Woods and McIlroy are still friendly, but their friendship has “soured” because of their divergent opinions on the direction the game should take. They have experienced a “falling out of sorts.”

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are business partners in addition to being lifelong friends.

Prior to Wednesday’s Wells Fargo Championship, McIlroy stated, “I think it got pretty messy and complicated, and I think the way it happened opened up some scar tissue and old wounds from things that have happened before.” For whatever reason, there was a segment of the board that might not have been happy with me returning.”

The repercussions of Woods and McIlroy’s collaboration will undoubtedly be embarrassing. The two are co-founders of TMRW Sports, the company launching TGL, an indoor golf league with technology integrated that will feature made-for-TV matches that will premiere on ESPN in January of 2025.

Last year, McIlroy said to GolfWeekly that he and Woods speak “every other day almost.” “He’s a great resource, and we don’t live too far away in Florida, so if I ever need to ask, we can get it done,” he continued. In addition to Charlie [Woods’ son], [Justin Thomas], he’s shown me certain things that I’m not sure whether he’s shown anyone else.

“I’ve never met a bigger golf nerd than him. He monitors everything and is well-versed in everything. Although he claims not to, he watches a lot.”
