It seems that the Pittsburgh Steelers are thinking about retaining cornerback Patrick Peterson for the upcoming campaign. However, Dallas Robinson of Pro Football Network asserted that the Steelers ought to focus on C.J. Gardner-Johnson, a different skilled veteran defensive back.

Robinson projected that Gardner-Johnson would be signed by the Steelers in NFL free agency on February 22.

Robinson stated, “Pittsburgh might look to find a better second safety to play opposite Minkah Fitzpatrick this offseason, while Steelers slot corner Chandon Sullivan is on track for free agency.”

Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, who missed the majority of the 2023 season due to a pectoral injury, may compete at both positions and shouldn’t cost much. Another one-year deal worth $6–8 million may be logical.

Due to a pectoral injury, Gardner-Johnson only participated in three games during the regular season. In all, he recorded 17 tackles, 3 pass breakups, and 1 interception.

Gardner-Johnson then recorded 12 total tackles, 1 pass defense, and 1 interception in three playoff games.

The 26-year-old is described by SB Nation’s Erik Schlitt of Pride of Detroit as a “positional versatile talent with Pro Bowl upside.” However, Gardner-Johnson contributes more than just his statistical output.

Schlitt stated that despite Gardner-Johnson’s blustery confidence and smack language, “he shares a team-first mentality that the Lions look for in a leader.”
