According to Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, Scottie Scheffler was arrested by a police officer who was either not wearing a body camera at the time of the incident or had it turned off.

Ahead to the 2024 PGA Championship’s second round, Scheffler was detained on Friday morning outside Valhalla Golf Club. He was accused with second-degree assault on a police officer, criminal mischief, and reckless driving. Scheffler is accused of attempting to enter the club by driving past a police officer in defiance of the officer’s orders.

While Bryan Gillis, the arresting officer, was injured and his pants were damaged when he was dragged by Scheffler’s automobile, Scheffler claimed that the event was a misunderstanding. The incident’s nature was questioned by Scheffler’s attorney.

According to Steve Romines, a local lawyer Scheffler has retained, “[Scheffler] was driving a marked player’s vehicle with credentials visible and proceeding as directed by another traffic officer,” on Friday. “These allegations stem from Scottie allegedly ignoring another officer’s traffic signals in the commotion.

Several eyewitnesses have attested to the fact that he was acting in accordance with instructions and did nothing improper. When told to stop, he did so right away, and he never once used his car to attack an officer. He will be entirely cleared, and we will pursue this legal action as necessary.

There is an arraignment set for May 21, but it doesn’t seem like the police tape will make things obvious. Greenberg informed nearby media outlets on Saturday that Gillis’s video camera was off.

“The officer’s bodycam was not activated at the time of the incident. We’ll make the video we have available,” Greenberg stated in a WDRB report from Louisville. “As far as I’m aware, none existed. There is no footage that we have found of Officer Gillis and Mr. Scheffler’s first interaction.”

Later on, Greenberg mentioned that there was a camera across the street, and it was hoped that it would capture Scheffler’s arrest and eventually lead to his release.

On Saturday, Scheffler made his way back to Valhalla and fired a second-round 66. In Round 3, he will tee off at 1:29 p.m.
