With Mercedes’ comeback happening at the same time as Aston Martin’s decline, F1 veteran Fernando Alonso has been humiliated by longtime adversary Lewis Hamilton.

A stunning statistic concerning Lewis Hamilton has Fernando Alonso looking like a pauper. After the unexpected announcement that Hamilton will be moving to Ferrari starting in 2025, Alonso was immediately associated with Mercedes.

Alonso is 42 years old, yet his speed on the track hasn’t decreased at all. But his professional decisions haven’t always lined up with his driving accuracy. He left Ferrari for McLaren ten years ago, only to see their relationship with engine supplier Honda collapse spectacularly.

Then, just as McLaren was getting back on its feet, albeit initially with Renault power and then with a Mercedes engine, he took a leave of absence from Formula One. Alonso returned to Formula One racing with the Renault team (now Alpine), and he went on to excel at Aston Martin in 2023.

Alonso was asked if he would be wooing Mercedes earlier this year as he considered his options after 2024. Mercedes had a difficult start to the season. After winning the Japanese Grand Prix in April and defeating both Hamilton and Russell, he was asked if he would be calling Silver Arrows chief Toto Wolff.

“That’s a very good question,” he responded. “Mercedes is behind now, so it doesn’t feel that attractive.” Alonso signed a new contract with Aston shortly after, committing to the team through the end of 2026. Although young Kimi Antonelli, who is now in Formula 2, is the current favorite for the position, Mercedes has yet to announce the identity of Russell’s future teammate.

After a few months, there has been a change in the Formula One scene. Aston is currently, at most, the fifth fastest team in the race, far behind Mercedes, who have recovered to challenge Red Bull and McLaren for first place.

Alonso ended outside the points in the previous meeting in Spain, when Hamilton finished third. Surprisingly, in three of the last four races, the British driver has finished at least one lap ahead of the longtime rival. Alonso had a succinct and direct message for the aspirational Aston team after such a poor home race.

He believes that the Austrian Grand Prix and the British Grand Prix that follows would go similarly as well, saying, “I think it’s gonna be painful as well because it has some characteristics of Barcelona, with the long corners.”
