Shortly after the unexpected release from the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Jones is inking a new deal somewhere in the NFC North.

The 29-year-old Jones is being signed by the Minnesota Vikings to a one-year, $7 million contract for the 2024 season, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic. The Vikings first expressed interest in Jones after he left the Packers on March 11.

The media and Packers supporters were caught off guard by Jones’s Monday release. At the 2024 NFL Combine two weeks prior, general manager Brian Gutekunst declared that Jones will “absolutely” return to the Packers for the upcoming campaign. However, Green Bay swiftly changed its direction due to disagreements on pay between the Packers and Jones’ group.

The Packers desired that he accept a wage cut of at least half, if not more. Before the NFL Scouting Combine, the Packers and agent Drew Rosenhaus began negotiating to reduce Jones’ number; but, for the next two weeks, not much movement was made. The two teams were remained far apart late in the week following the combine, despite a minor improvement in their relationship. Russini and co-author Matt Schneidman stated that Jones’ camp rejected the Packers’ penultimate offer, which they made last Friday.

After that, the Packers turned their attention to other alternatives for running backs. In the end, they came to an agreement on a four-year, $48 million contract with Josh Jacobs, a standout who led the NFL in rushing yards (1,653) while playing for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022.
