Inching closer to the April 25 NFL Draft in 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs still require a starting left tackle.

Wanya Morris, an offensive tackle in his second year, might theoretically start at left tackle for the team the next season, but it would be preferable for him to continue honing his craft as a backup and a vital backup option in case the offensive line is injured.

Finding a franchise left tackle in this year’s extremely good offensive lineman draft class is therefore probably at the top of general manager Brett Veach’s three-day priority list.

But with cornerback L’Jarius Sneed going to the Tennessee Titans, the Chiefs will soon have more financial room, and Moe Moton of Bleacher Report thinks the team could trade for this man to address one of their biggest needs:

Offensive tackle Cam Robinson of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Moton posted on March 29. “The 28-year-old has missed games due to injuries and a suspension, but he’s a solid plug-in play option if Kansas City wants a proven starter.”

In addition, Moton discussed what he thinks the Jaguars may get in a trade for Robinson should they choose to bring him back in-house.

“Walker Little could take over at left tackle for Jacksonville, making Robinson expendable and available for a middle-round selection.”

Cam Robinson is a good starter who just experienced hardship.

When healthy and in the starting lineup, Robinson has been a fine starting-caliber player since the Jaguars selected him 34th overall in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

In five seasons as Jacksonville’s starting full-time defensive end, Robinson gave up 20 sacks. However, due to injuries (missing 32 regular season games during his NFL career) and Robinson’s off-field actions, Moton and others are beginning to question whether Robinson, 28, will be leaving Jacksonville sooner rather than later.

Robinson has a three-year, $54 million deal with the Jaguars, which is currently in its last year. Over The Cap estimates that he has a $21.9 million cap hit.

Over his seven-year NFL career, Robinson has earned $51.9 million, according to Spotrac.

Would the Chiefs find it worthwhile to trade for Cam Robinson?

Kansas City should be interested in acquiring Robinson for a mid-round pick, regardless of the exact value of that pick.

By forfeiting a Day 2 or Day 3 draft pick, the two-time defending Super Bowl winners may take care of one of their most pressing requirements. Furthermore, the team values a proven commodity more than taking a chance on an upcoming potential, thus giving up that kind of draft capital for them is preferable.

Robinson’s significant 2024 cap impact may be reduced if Kansas City were to offer him a contract extension. By then, the Chiefs would still have spending capital for additional acquisitions or to use in the 2025 offseason.

As of right now, OTC reports that the Chiefs have $6.5 million in cap space. The Chiefs will have the ninth-most cap space in the NFL with $26.3 million once Sneed officially signs with the Titans and his $19.8 million cap hit is removed from Kansas City’s records.
