Michael Gallup’s Replacement found: Cowboys Stated

Fans of the Dallas Cowboys have been disappointed with the team’s offseason tactics, but they might experience some excitement if a new wide receiver is added. Dallas has to find a new wide receiver for their team, either to take Michael Gallup’s spot right away or at least to make a run at it.

Devontez Walker, a prospect from North Carolina, might be the answer, according to Ralph Vacchiano of FOX Sports. With their third-round selection, the Cowboys are expected to select Vacchiano, a 22-year-old receiver, on Day 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Cowboys should give Jalen Tolbert some competition for the third receiver position, even though they appear optimistic that he will develop into a trustworthy player. Vacchiano noted on March 21 that Walker, a 6-1, 193-pound deep threat, ran an incredible 4.36 at the combine, ranking third among this year’s receivers in a historically quick group.

Even for a talent who still needs some refinement, that kind of speed is always thrilling. Walker would not immediately be the whole deal. However, he might be able to make significant contributions right away and grow into something even greater.

Devontez Walker Moves to North Carolina 

Walker’s undergraduate career began at Kent State, where he established himself in 2022. Walker’s sophomore season saw him catch 58 catches for 921 yards and score 12 touchdowns in all, according to Sports Reference.

Walker returned to his native North Carolina and enrolled at UNC in an attempt to increase his prospects of getting into the NFL. Despite his lack of prominence or productivity with the Tar Heels, he was a crucial big-play weapon for quarterback Drake Maye.

Walker is a “all-day vertical target,” according to NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, who also notes that his skill set is limited.

Zierlein wrote, “He’s fine when he’s allowed to maintain play speed and keep his feet moving.” His poor short-area footwork and route awareness make him much easier to cover when he’s forced to make tighter bends or enter and exit breaks. Walker’s combat catch demonstrated a significant improvement, but it’s still unclear if he has the athletic prowess to perform at a professional level.

Cowboys Might Make a Trade to Get a Veteran WR 

Dallas could also trade for a new pass-catcher in addition to drafting one. Treylon Burks, a wide receiver with the Tennessee Titans, is one possible name.

Burks is mentioned, citing the fact that the Cowboys likely want to “hedge their bets” on Jalen Tolbert with a different receiver. Burks is just starting his third NFL season, so he hasn’t lived up to the hype surrounding his first-round selection.

In actuality, Burks and Walker are rather similar in terms of makeup, despite some significant distinctions. Walker is an extremely fast wide receiver (WR), but Burks is stronger and more adept at high-pointing the ball on long passes.
