For the first time since 2016–17, the New York Yankees did not make it to the postseason. In 2009, they missed the World Series.

It should come as no surprise that manager Aaron Boone is under fire given that owner Hal Steinbrenner consistently asserts that a season is a failure if it does not result in a World Series championship.

What many in the baseball community, including Rachael Millanta of Heavy.com, have been thinking about Boone, has been validated by the oddsmakers. Boone is thought to be the MLB manager who will be fired first this season.

Boone’s odds of being sacked are +500 according to Bet Online. Following him is Alex Cora of the Boston Red Sox at +1000, Bud Black of the Colorado Rockies at +700, and Dave Martinez of the Washington Nationals at +600.

Aaron Boone’s 7th Season Must Be Fortunate

With a mere 82-80 record in 2018, the Yankees were on the verge of ending their 31-year winning streak that began in 1993. They placed fourth in the American League East, eight games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the final AL wild-card slot and 19 games behind the division-winning Baltimore Orioles.

One reason the Yankees almost finished above.500 was injuries. Aaron Judge, designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, third baseman DJ LeMahieu, and center fielder Aaron Judge all experienced lengthy periods on the injured list. Carlos Rodon, a left-hander who signed a six-year, $162 million contract as a free agent the previous offseason, did the same.

However, acquiring right fielder Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres was the Yankees’ largest trade acquisition of the winter. A second-time Gold Glove winner, outfielder Trent Grisham, traveled to New York as part of the agreement.

In a trade with the Red Sox, left fielder Alex Verdugo was obtained, and right-hander Marcus Stroman agreed to a two-year, $37 million contract in free agency.

Boone previously told Heavy.com that he is hopeful about the Yankees contending again this season because of the summer moves. However, the Yankees have already experienced another injury scare this spring, as the organization announced on Monday that Gerrit Cole, the current AL Cy Young Award winner, will have an MRI on his wobbly right elbow.

Boone has lasted six seasons with the Yankees because to their patience. He has produced two AL East titles, five postseason appearances, and a regular-season record of 509-361.

But the fact that Boone hasn’t appeared in the World Series may indicate that his time is running out.

Is Dave Martinez of the Nationals Really Under Fire?

The Nationals have finished last in the National League East for four straight seasons after winning the World Series in 2019, therefore it is reasonable to assume Dave Martinez could be in trouble. But it is most likely not the case.

Right-hander Stephen Strasburg, left-hander Patrick Corbin, reliever Tanner Rainey, and center fielder Victor Robles are the only four members of the championship club still playing. Due to injury, Strasburg is unlikely to play again, and none of the other three are particularly important.

The Nationals also became better last season, going from 55-107 in 2022 to 71-91. Martinez’s employment would appear to be at risk only in the event of a collapse in 2024.

Black finds himself in a similar rebuilding predicament following the Rockies’ 31-year existence, as they finished 59-103 last season—their lowest record. Bud Black, like Martinez, is a well-respected veteran facing an impossible scenario. Nothing has suggested that his position is in danger.

Given that the Red Sox have finished in the AL East basement the past two seasons, Alex Cora may be in jeopardy. Nonetheless, Cora is well respected in the industry and is more likely to sign a big contract elsewhere after leaving Boston at the end of this season when his contract expires.
