After a recent rumor revealed the Dallas Cowboys’ intention to move a veteran wide receiver, the team’s receiving group strategy is beginning to take shape. Although Michael Gallup’s exit from the team in 2024 isn’t shocking, it is made more intriguing by a possible trade.

Reporter Calvin Watkins of Dallas Morning News stated on March 9 that Gallup has been granted permission by the team to pursue a trade.

Watkins said on X, “Cowboys have given WR Michael Gallup permission to seek a trade,” according to a source. Teams anticipate Gallup’s release, thus the situation is difficult. @dmn_cowboys

It doesn’t imply he will be traded just because the Cowboys want to. Gallup has had trouble regaining the form that won him Dallas’ second deal in the first place. Teams could prefer to take their chances elsewhere given that he is expected to receive a substantial contract in 2024.

Nonetheless, it will be a significant offseason victory if the Cowboys are able to complete a deal. Getting as much value as possible is crucial because it is never desirable to let players walk for free.

Contract with Michael Gallup Makes Trade Challenging

Gallup, a third-round selection in the 2017 NFL draft, joined the Cowboys and quickly established himself as a vital weapon. With 1107 receiving yards and six touchdowns in his second season, he reached his peak. 2019 saw him have yet another strong 843-yard campaign, and Dallas awarded him a five-year, $57.5 million contract.

Gallup has not finished a season with 500 yards in any of the three seasons that have passed since. The Cowboys made an effort to be patient, but it’s time to move on because 2023 will only be a tiny part of Gallup’s campaign.

To start with, Spotrac estimates that he will make $8.5 million in salary in 2024. His pay only goes up from 2025 to 2026, when it reaches $10.5 million. That’s not good value for a player who often struggles to gain 500 yards in a season.

Although this deal isn’t aging as badly as it was a year ago due to the growing salary cap and contract fees, most teams still wouldn’t want to take it on. The Cowboys’ best chance of securing a deal is actually if interested teams desire his services intensely enough to prevent a free agency bidding war.

Would the Cowboys Trade Another Wide Receiver?

The Cowboys’ objectives have been made clear by the Gallup survey, but it’s possible that they are considering another wide receiver move. There has been continual conjecture during the offseason about Brandin Cooks being dealt to another team.

The newest trade suggestion came from Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report. Knox proposed a trade in which the Baltimore Ravens would receive fourth- and seventh-round picks in the 2024 NFL draft in return for Cooks.

Cooks caught 54 catches for 657 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2024, a far more prolific season than Gallup’s. But in addition to his $8 million salary, he will receive a $3 million roster bonus in 2024.

Although Cooks brings expertise that the Cowboys lack in the group, that is a little pricy. In his nine-year career, the veteran has played with some of the greatest modern quarterbacks, including Matt Stafford, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady. He has also won a Super Bowl.
