After the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton responded to Lando Norris’s clever comment in a casual manner, blaming Norris’s youth for his lack of care.

The forty-year-old seven-time world champion noted that his viewpoint has changed with time and that he would have handled situations differently in his twenties.

Speaking with Norris in the cooling area at the Hungaroring, where Hamilton finished third and Norris finished second behind teammate Oscar Piastri, the Mercedes driver praised Norris. “You had a fast car seven years ago,” Norris retorted, “and you made the most of it, now it’s us.”

Hamilton said he wasn’t bothered by the comment because it was “an age thing” and acknowledged the disappointment he felt after coming so close to losing a race.

He stated to the press: “I was not bothered by it. “I’m almost forty years old, so I remember what it was like to be in my mid-20s.

Looking back, I can recall things I said or did that I would have done better.

“I observe that, and I say, ‘It’s an age thing,'” such as how you feel after a race when you should have won. “In the end, all drivers and competitors put a lot of pressure on themselves; that’s how we do what we do.

I don’t take it personally. “I don’t think you can be particularly great without putting pressure on yourself, you’ve got to aim high and if you fail, and you’re like: ‘that is the greatest thing ever’ and you are really relaxed about, you are never going to achieve what you potentially could.”

Regarding Norris’s criticism of himself, Hamilton said that the 24-year-old driver is “doing a lot better” than he did when he was in his 20s and praised him for his “great driving.”

He continued, saying: Can you criticize oneself too harshly? Indeed, when I was his age, there was a period of time when I spent three days alone in my room.

“I don’t think Lando has locked himself in his room for three days, but I know what it’s like, and it wasn’t good for me.

“What is important is just to continue to do what he is doing, he is driving great, has a great car and needs to keep working together as a team.”
