Ted Toleman, the former owner of a Formula 1 team who managed his own team in the 1980s, passed away at the age of 86.

At the age of 86, Ted Toleman, the creator and owner of the Toleman Formula 1 team, passed away.

His family released a statement confirming his passing.

Between 1981 and 1985, the Toleman F1 team competed in 70 Grands Prix; after being acquired by Benetton, it is now known as the Alpine team.

Most notably, Toleman introduced three-time world champion Ayrton Senna to Formula One racing.

Senna became a member of the team in 1984 and had a great rookie season in the championship, finishing on three podiums before leaving for Lotus the next year.

Toleman’s best-ever Formula One campaign came in 1984, when it placed seventh in the Constructors’ standings.

During its brief tenure in Formula One, Toleman fielded drivers such as Stefan Johansson and Derick Warwick, two other prominent drivers.

According to his family, Ted Toleman “was an avid adventurer” outside of Formula One, having won several championships as an offshore powerboat racer.

He even participated in other well-known motorsport competitions, such as the Dakar Rally and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

After his F1 adventure, Toleman and his wife Maitie traveled frequently between Manila, Philippines, and Australia’s Gold Coast.

On April 10, Toleman, who had been ill for a long time, passed away due to complications from cardiorenal syndrome.
