Carson Wentz, a former teammate of Jalen Hurts, is inking a contract with the Chiefs.

A former star quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles is joining a Super Bowl contender.

According to a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Carson Wentz, the former No. 2 overall draft pick and MVP contender with the Eagles, is joining the Kansas City Chiefs to back up quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Carson Wentz Posted in 2017 with an MVP-caliber season

Wentz, 31, signed with the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10 after playing the first half of the season as a free agent. He played the second half of 2023 with the team. As the Rams rested starting quarterback Matthew Stafford for the season finale, Wentz started just one game for the team. He went 17-for-24 with two touchdowns, one interception, and 163 passing yards. In the beginning, he also recorded 56 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Wentz was only a highly regarded starter with the Eagles before joining the Rams. In 2017, the year the Eagles won the Super Bowl, Wentz was selected to the Pro Bowl and to the Second Team All-Pro. Wentz, meanwhile, was sidelined for Philadelphia’s entire postseason campaign after suffering an ACL tear in a Week 14 game.

Wentz had 33 touchdowns versus seven interceptions and a 101.9 quarterback rating, making it a year fit for an MVP candidate. Despite missing four games, he was still voted MVP and finished third. His quarterback rating and throwing touchdown % were the best in the NFL, and he scored the second-most touchdowns overall.

Carson Wentz Is Still Not in 2017 Shape

Since then, though, Wentz’s career has collapsed. For three more seasons, Wentz was the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, which helped the team make it to the playoffs in both 2018 and 2019. But he only made 11 starts in 2018 due to a back issue, which kept him out of the playoffs once more.

In 2019, Wentz was allowed to start his first-ever playoff game; however, he sustained a concussion in the first quarter and was sidelined for the rest of the game.

He was the starting quarterback going into the 2020 campaign, but Jalen Hurts, a rookie, took his spot when he led the league in interceptions (15), turnovers (19), and sacks (50). At the end of the season, Wentz led the league in all three of those categories, despite being benched after just 12 games.

Wentz has started for the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Commanders since leaving Philadelphia. To get the former No. 2 overall pick, the Colts actually had to forfeit a first and third-round pick. With a postseason place on the line, Wentz lost his final two starts of the season, including a season-ending loss to the league-worst Jacksonville Jaguars, despite having a successful season with the Colts in 2021 (27 touchdowns versus seven interceptions).

Wentz started just one season with each team before being released, and both teams moved on.

He’ll play a similar position behind franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, just as he did as Stafford’s backup in Los Angeles.

Wentz has completed 62.7% of his passes for 22,292 yards, 153 touchdowns, and 67 interceptions in eight seasons as a quarterback. 93 starts and 95 appearances later, he has a career record of 47-45-1.
